While the Church of Scientology has been sentenced Tuesday by the French courts for organized fraud, it is the subject of two court cases in Belgium.

An investigation into the Church of Scientology began in Belgium in 1997, following complaints from former members for fraud, extortion, illegal practice of medicine, infringements of trade practices and criminal organization. Searches were conducted two years later in different seats of the movement. In 2007, federal prosecutors requested the dismissal of twelve individuals and two corporations, the Church of Scientology of Belgium and the European office of the Church of Scientology International.

Last May, the defense of several defendants asked before the council chamber of additional duties. This request, approved in part, will be reviewed on appeal in November by the House of indictments.

Moreover, last April, the Federal Police conducted a search at the Belgian headquarters of the Church of Scientology, at Uccle, in the context of a record for forgery and fraud. The investigation began after information from the Brussels Regional Office for employment on contract jobs doubtful provided by the Church of Scientology.

No legal definition of cults

Unlike France, where the sects may be sentenced as organizations mentally or physically abusing persons in a position of weakness, Belgian law provides no legal definition sects. There is no record of sects.

According CIAOSN (Center for Information and advice on harmful sectarian organizations), the Church of Scientology is a marginal movement in Belgium with approximately 250 members. The Church of Scientology of Belgium declares it to have 2,000 members.

The Church of Scientology of Belgium moved in last May's headquarters, in Uccle Mechelen staffed to fifteen people.

The movement will soon inaugurate the Boulevard de Waterloo in Brussels, a European center for the marketing of goods (lbs. ..) and services. The Church of Scientology International also has a European office located rue de la Loi.

A library of the Church of Scientology formerly located Petite rue au Beurre Brussels, closed last spring. For CIAOSN both the closure of this library as Belgian headquarters relocation to an area 'less radiant international' reflects a decline of the movement.

The Church of Scientology appeared in Belgium in the mid 70s and had peaked in the late 80s, as CIAOSN.

The Church of Scientology of Belgium for his part said that the number of members increases.

First off, the Belgian justice system is notriously slow. I mean slooooowwww.
We were expecting something to start last year on the big ancient case but just when it seemed to be hotting up, the judge accepted that some more investigation was needed. Typically, there was no timeframe given. So, what this article reports, amongst the things we already know, is that it seems they are going to review these investigations this month. Simply another administrative judicial step IMO.
Expect disappointment and more delay. If there was going to be any sign of an announcement of a fixed trial date then we'd know about it.

I'll PM the OCMB Belgique and see if Ican get some more insight.

Well, that brings up an interesting point: the longer the cult drags these cases out, the more of them there are at a given time. This provides good fodder for picket signs. :-)
