ok so I've been doing a little digging

MARPOL is the convention in charge of governing waste disposal world wide, MARPOL 73/78 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia take note that Bonaire is not on the list of participating countries. however they are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, like Aruba or Saint Marrtin, which is on the list, and there fore there's a chance that they might take action on this if it's reported to them. I'm not sure weather or not Bonaire is technically independant from the Netherlands or not and just symbolically tied in with them, if they are, this is one indicator of how they're getting away with this. they've managed to bypass the netherlands somehow.

I cannot determine if freewinds has a marine sanitation device on board. any ex crew, or ppl who deal with them in the ship yards might be able to shed some light on that, since their vessel is over the 400 ton mark they are required by law to have one. interestingly enough freewinds recently hosted five of the MARPOL seminars that went on in 2007
MARPOL seminars hosted by FREEWINDS: WTF? this could possibly be another indicator of how they're getting away with it...at the very least they are framiliar with the laws, and have just found away around them. tin foil hat version is they've made some pay offs so they don't have to upgrade their ships to meet with MARPOL standards.

another point of interest is the MARPOL annex iv which only seems to mention dumping no more than 3 nautical miles off of any shoreline, and doesn't seem to make any provision for the dumping of sewage on land, this may very well be out of MARPOL's duristiction any way, and completely in the hands of the Netherlands or the governing bodies of the island of bonaire.

Ultimately I don't think freewinds can be held accountable for this one...legally speaking that is...although I am not a lawyer, so I can't say for sure. but there are strong indications they've found some convenient loop holes that are saving them costs for sewage disposal.

Someone wanted dates of dumps. This goes way back and is not possible to track in detail. For example in July 2008 she snuck in overnight without making a booking and left very early in the morning.

Freewinds has been dumping waste water in the ponds in Bonaire since at least 2003 when Sean Paton wrote a letter protesting to the Bonaire reporter. He has always blamed the ship not the waste management company.

Information for 2006 is restricted to Barbados.

The time-line suggests dumping on Bonaire continued through 2007 when she was back on the ABC circuit. However the five MARPOL seminars from 12 to 22 November 2007 did not include Bonaire.

2008: various problems with asbestos and the structure of the hull but after leaving port on 26 June for trial runs (DNV inspection?, DNV certificate issued 27 June) she was back in Bonaire overnight 29-30 June to dump the accumulated shit (eye witness report from a Bonaire blog). On 1 July she was there with 'tourists', no doubt the 64 who attended that year's Maiden Voyage Anniversary Event.

She advertised her ABC cruises again in October 2008 but was seen only once at Curacao. She also hosted a further MARPOL seminar in Curacao on behalf of IMO and UNEP. No confirmation of other calls from any source.

Bonaire does not list the failboat between 11 March 2009 and December 2010 but she was calling in to dump waste water as filmed by Sean Paton in July 2009 - his third video. Why has he taken down his videos? Does anyone have a copy that could be edited?

Again in April this year Freewinds publicity heralded her return to the ABC circuit. Immediate result: one visit to Aruba in May with a grand total of 77 passengers.

Owners, operators, officers and crew are a set of lying Scientologists, who will say and do anything to keep this filthy old ship afloat.

One way of influencing her local popularity might be to let other cruise ship operators know about the probable danger of the blue asbestos probably remaining on board and infecting their passengers at public events. This seems to have worked in Colombia and perhaps in Barbados. It also affects local people who work on board or go to the free concerts. A Colombian journalist also objected to local people being lured on board for tests or self-improvement courses without realising this was a Scientology boat.

These cruise lines bring hundreds of thousands of passengers a year to the Caribbean and they tie up just next door. Freewinds - who might now be getting 200 or 300 a month - would not be missed.

Incidentally since I started tracking her consistently, Aruba seems to have stopped publishing its very useful summary of the previous month's cruise ship arrivals. Last summary is for September 2009. Any ideas?

I'm reluctant to think that the Freewinds would actually take the trouble of buying in sweet water so their waste can be purified in the new treatment plant in april. I'm thinking they'll probably just keep using salt water, since it's cheaper and easier...
I hope we'll hear how that works out.
