Re: La Stampa: Italian criminal investigation against the CoS
California, France, and now Turin...
Scientology is about to experience the same thing they did to the IRS. These lawsuits will snowball from the few brave souls breaking trail, to the hundreds who are sitting back in the wings, watching to see how it goes before them make their move. I don't doubt that, even now, the cult is rewriting their SO contract to remove all references to "employees." But it's too late for that, isn't it? The hundreds of people who lost years of their lives and are now living marginal lives with few resources are not going to go away. And the cult's defenses are weak. "They were religious volunteers. They belonged to a religious order, like monks. They received room and board for their labor." Coupled with the French conviction and the growing flood of bad press, stories that are beginning to attract global attention, how can Scientology possibly prevail? [edit]And now, Belgium is beginning to roll! It just keeps getting better! Scientologie: deux affaires pendantes en Belgique | RTBF INFO[/edit] This is the beginning of what I've been waiting for, the abused and exploited raising their voices together, calling for justice. Meanwhile, the cult is in denial. They've bought buildings! They're expanding! Their expensive, carefully choreographed Grand Opening events are solely for the benefit of the remaining true believers, enveloping them in a glamour of success and expansion. They want to believe it, but at some point it will become painfully clear that DM is playing the fiddle as their world slowly collapses, like the cursed house in Poltergeist. There's obviously still plenty of money left to squander on glittering events like the grand opening in DC. Compensation for all the ex SO members is going to poke a lot of very big holes in L. Ron's moneybags. I'm going to enjoy the show. In fact, it's the best show I've ever watched in my life, despite the fact that the denoument is fairly predetermined. Quote:

Re: La Stampa: Italian criminal investigation against the CoS
Translated by Anonymous from the website of Italian daily newspaper La Stampa, November 4, 2009.
A 31-YEAR-OLD WOMAN DESCRIBES HER ORDEAL WITH TWO OF THE SECT'S FOLLOWERS. SHE WAS FREED BY HER PARENTS. Enslaved by Scientology Schiavizzata da Scientology by Massimo Numa "Schiavizzata da Scientology"- LASTAMPA.it "They obliged me to hand over all my money. If I rebelled, I was beaten." TURIN Isolated, deprived of her money and of everything she possessed, forced to work for months without pay and induced into becoming a follower of Scientology. This is the story - sad and disturbing - of Marina (not her real name), a 31-year-old professional from Turin, and it will be at the center of a criminal investigation by the public prosecutor's office. In a lengthy complaint submitted by her lawyer, Loredana Gemelli, she tells of a long ordeal whose every detail was organized by two presumed followers of the Church of Scientology: a man and a woman. The man is an entrepreneur, the woman a secretary. The man is reputed to have an important role at one of the headquarters of Scientology for Northeast Italy, while the woman is said to be a "fanatical disciple" of L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology, and to have acted as both accomplice and perpetrator in a reign of psychological violence and torment. "In May 2009, X began to tell me about the Scientology organization, of which he had become a devout follower, advising me to join because of the great benefits he said he had received ... He said he was a 'clear', often had to travel, and was directed from the headquarters in Copenhagen..." "After the first month, the two began constantly showing me literature about the organization's philosophy...". This continued: "In particular, after my first month of work (at a company run by the man), the two began an obsessive treatment designed to indoctrinate me; reading the books became compulsory and I was later forced to write reports on what I had done wrong in life. I had to do this after work, between 6 P.M. and midnight, with the woman present." A Nightmare. They took everything from Marina - credit cards, checks, jewelry - for keeping in the company safe. They gave her 50 euros a week for food. She was deprived of all freedom and kept under surveillance 24 hours a day. In the end, she was reduced to a skeleton: "I weighed 39 kilos [86 pounds], I slept only four hours a night and was continually subjected to accusations for the poor results of my work..." "... Later, as I tried to rebel, the indoctrination became more intense and I was forced to read Scientology books in the presence of the man and the woman, who then asked me to explain what I read and, if I didn't understand, I had to reread the same passages over and over again... They told me that the girl who had worked eleven years in that office was dismissed because she refused to follow the theories of Scientology ..." Serious Allegations. Finally, after months of pressure, as the work schedule became ever more exhausting and the coercion to study Hubbard's books became more and more relentless, the so-called "clear" went on the warpath. He wanted money: a check for 30,000 euros, as collateral for the expenses that he was "supporting". Marina managed to resist. Then they forced her to call her parents and ask them to send a new checkbook and credit card, because the card they had taken from her had expired. Marina tried to rebel. She wanted no longer to submit to this regime of slavery and psychological violence. In a "fit of exhaustion", Marina tearfully told the woman who was watching her that she wanted to leave; the woman went totally out of control. "After we had an argument, she would grab me by the neck and slam me against the wall. Immediately afterward, she would say that she was doing this for my own good and that she had been through the same experience." Marina was rescued on the night of July 31. Her parents, alarmed by the telephone call from their daughter, rushed to the city in Northeast Italy where she was held and freed her from her alleged persecutors. They allegedly demanded even more money. "After returning to Turin, I took steps to block my ATM card and my credit card. I discovered that, during this whole period of time, only 700 euros were credited as pay for my work." Thus was insult added to injury. Scientology defines a "Clear" as a human being who is free from trauma (and aware of his "reactive mind"). The road toward the state of "Clear" consists of various levels of "auditing", a one-on-one technique between a practitioner (called an "auditor") who asks questions and a patient (called a "preclear"). The levels of auditing, called "grades", cost money, as do all Scientology courses and services. The Church of Turin: "We are not aware of these facts" Asked to respond to the content of the complaint, the Church of Scientology of Turin replied through its press secretary, Giuseppe Cicogna, head of public affairs, in a terse e-mail: "We cannot provide an educated response because we are not aware of the facts. Generally speaking, this appears to reflect an attitude towards the Church of Scientology which is more prevalent among newspaper editors than in real life. Furthermore, the casual manner in which the newspaper has informed us that it could not provide additional information because it is contained in a document which is covered by the confidentiality requirements of the investigation, but from which quotes were taken, appears particularly serious, even when it comes to balancing the freedom of the press."
