I have read on the internet today that Scientology have been using a stall in Quayside Market to sell their religion. This causes me no small amount of alarm. Scientology should not have use of any publicly owned buildings or space, on the grounds that what is on offer is Harmful, Undesirable and offensive.

Harmful - (Harmful enough to be banned in several countries)

1. (Causing Suicide)
The primary method for sales is the "Personality Test", which has no right answers, Once filled in, the Scientology sales person uses any information gained to "find a ruin" which in english is "bring the person to tears" the result is always that a person needs a course in Scientology (Communication Course) which will help the victim sort (whatever) out. There have been cases of suicide following these discussions.

2. (Quack Medicine)
Part of their "Tech" is encouraging mothers of new born babies that
Hubbard's Baby Formula (Barley Water & Honey) be used as a replacement
for mothers/powdered milk

3. (Disconnection Policy)
More members of Scientology have used church provided documents to inform their families not to contact them than any other religion.
Family members are sent a nasty CD (where an aggressive male voice berates them for 74minutes) to accompany the "Disconnection Notice".
This has been the last many thousands of families have heard from their
loved ones

Undesirable - (infiltrating the community)

Offensive -
1. (Urban Terrorism)
Here is a link pertaining to the Cult's Fair Game Policy,
where they harass and terrorize anyone they perceive as an enemy

2. (Discrimination against human rights acts)
on page 125 of Science of Survival (L Ron Hubbard) which is treated as
Scientology's "Book 2", Hubbard refers to gays and lesbians as perverts,
and suggests they be sent off to a Scientology concentration camp to
cure them, he goes on to say that those unable to be cured should be killed.

I would hope even the most neutral department must exercise discretion
in the face of facts. The fact is that Scientology is a dangerous cult,
which seeks to overthrow normal secular governance and healthcare - in
favour of their Stazi like regime. Harmful, Undesirable AND offensive.

Note, There is no official UK government supported status which declares scientology as a religion. Most critics, especially those ex-scientologists who have suffered from the abuses and coercive tatics of the organisation which runs scientology, would call it a cult.

reading shit like this makes me so happy my forbears had the good sense to tell your monarch to go fuck himself and enshrined the rights to free speech and assembly as the highest law.

that said, i'd leave the megaphone at home. while the market bylaws might not apply, i wouldn't be surprised if there are local ordinances against using sound amplification in a public space without some sort of permit.

personally, i like the setting up your own stall idea. is twenty quid really all that hard to scrape together?
