A friend sent me a French national magazine (VSD) (=TIME or Newsweek in USA, approx).

Article + big photo on double page.

tl;dr it says Scientology VMs are in Haiti for the image as proselytizing in Haiti is a waste of time. Media attention was the focus, apparently.

That was what I was wondering. There's no dust and crap in the air like 9-11, and there's (touch wood) no airborne infections making the rounds.

Possibilities:

• They put Vicks Vaporub in the inside to block the smell. (Try Tiger Baum, much stronger.)
• Some VMs recognize that they are being used and want to remain .. anonymous.
• It's what all the cool VMs are doing...

Meh.
And were tossed out of the area, did not collect a medal from the FDNY, and Scientology has a problem counting "large numbers".
He didn't personally fund it (although he did chip in a fair chunk), mainly he raised donations from gullible people who believed his story about snake-oil miracles for rescue workers.

Can we have the cover date of the magazine please Michael? It's not a good reference otherwise.

- yes, a European flight has already gone in. That's another cult grab the credit line though - the company that is providing the planes from NY and LA has donated them.

- That's just anti-American muckraking. There are landing slots, priorities, schedules in place now. IF a plane was turned away, likely it missed its slot and ran low on fuel waiting for another. Travolta didn't just 'turn up', he booked like everyone else and (I suspect) got in partly for publicity purposes - for the relief funding NOT Scientology. He subsequently gave up some of his prebooked interview time on chat shows for his new film to plug Haiti, which is fast dropping off the media front pages.
There is evidence of American bias by the way - I spotted a report that the USAF were under instructions not to fly non-US civilians out of Haiti.
