This just made me sick - Can someone verify or debunk this ?

Germany: No Scientology Ban

_____________________________________
Letter to the Editor

The chairman of the German Conference of Ministers of Interior said on the weekend that the controversial Church of Scientology will not be banned in Germany.

The head of the secret service of the German State of Brandenburg who also is the chairman of the Conference of Interior Ministers in Germany broke the news on the weekend that "Scientology will not be banned" in Germany. A year ago plans in this direction had been announced broadly and reported about internationally.

A secret 46-page report on Scientology of the German internal secret service, Office for Protection of the Constitution was leaked to the media earlier last month and revealed that the German government had not found any evidence for criminal or anti-constitutional activities of the Church of Scientology and strongly recommended not to start a banning procedure.

The news agency ddp reports (a somewhat English translation): Schönbohm: Scientology will not be banned Berlin. The controversial Scientology Organization may not be in fear of being banned in Germany. "We have come to the result that a banning would not be helpful", the Brandenburg minister of interior Schonbohm said to Welt am Sonntag according to a report.

Schonbohm is chairman of the Conference of Ministers of Interior (CMI) that is coming together in Potsdam on Wednesday. Last year the CMI conference had ordered the Secret Service to check for a ban per the association law. Schönbohm now said to have had a skeptical viewpoint since the very beginning. "We tend to forbid ideas when thinking them to be not fully correct. But we live in a liberal and democratic society where freedom of opinion is of high value", he said. He wishes more trust in democracy. "I consider someone a coward who believes seriously to be at risk because of 5,000 Scientologists", Schönbohm said.

The members of the Brotherhood have no way of recognizing one another, and it is impossible for any one member to be aware of the identity of more than a few others.
The Brotherhood cannot be wiped out because it is not an organization in the ordinary sense. Nothing holds it together except an idea which is indestructible.

I can verify, because it was reported by a reputable newspaper and there were already reports before that on the negative assessment in the report by the OPC agency. See this thread:

Let's not get too upset about this. It's been made plainly obvious in the past that Germany doesn't like the COS and they're (rightly) suspicious of their methods and agenda. Just because a ban isn't in sight NOW doesn't mean there won't be restrictions and monitoring of their movements-and there have been.

Let them gather more (hardcore) evidence of wrongdoing in Germany. And look at it this way; Germany is a LOT closer to banning Scientology than the US is. They're far more on the ball and aware of what the COS is capable of.

Patience is a virtue. Europe is many steps ahead of America in banning the COS. It won't happen overnight. But it WILL happen

Well, on the lighter side, we now have a more accurate figure for German adherents 5,000 is laughable in light of the membershit that COS claims to have in Germany.

Please note; I did see the typo above, but thought it seemed appropriate, so left it as it was. Looks like a Freudian slip to me.

I've never thought that banning organisations was the way to go, so this isn't a real loss to me.

The good news is that the german govornment sees them as the problem they are, and stresses/surveiliance them in any ways possible under the law.

If they don't ban them, they sure as hell better deal with them like the criminal organization they are. I would hope that at least they'd support investigations into their activity. Indeed, banning a religious group could spell a bad precedent in the long run (I know, I know, they aren't a real religious group, but they are seen as one by most of the world and that what seems to be the mindset in this situation).

Still, if Germany acts like this, how will other countries do so? I don't see a bright side to this at all.

The german press is reporting differences of opinion between the interior ministers, especially Hamburg and Bavaria taking a strong stance against CoS. The conference is going to continue until friday according to news reports.

Quotes from different interior ministers are being reported. Here's the gist of what is being reported:

Brandenburg: No chance for a ban, in Germany we readily want to ban organisations with points of view that are not exactly accurate. Who feels threatened by 5000 Scientologists in Germany is a coward.
Berlin: CoS is anticonstitutional, but basically insignificant
Hamburg: let's check whether it can be banned via association-law
Bavaria: "We in Bavaria are in any event of the opinion that Scientology is a highly dubious organisation when it comes to the constitution. However, I do acknowledge that there are differences in opinion and because of this we'll have to continue talking about this."

To be honest banning the organisation would just give them cause to bleet and baww about persecution etc. They would claim to have a strong "underground" movement of support in Germany and anything that went wrong with Germany economically say, would be because they banned scientology. Education is the best way - although I salute the Russians for seeing through their tissue of religion and shutting down their pants psuedo psycho treatment centre. In fact that approach works better because they are not banning a "religion" they are legitimately preventing a dangerous pseudo treatment practice.
