These provisions came unannounced in a proposed amendment to the Defamation Bill, which was before the Oireachtas Committee on Justice yesterday (but was not discussed). The proposal from Ahern does not define “religion”, so there is no reason to imagine the Church of Scientology would not be protected by it from the publication of “abusive or insulting matter”.

Blasphemy and libel belong to two different logics, IMHO. People will use this to silence their critics.

Don't think that'll get you out of a long, expensive, and painful court proceeding. This is just the kind of thing the Scilons would cream their pants over: an excuse to have every single critic arrested and put through the wringer. So what if no one actually gets convicted, they'd still succeed in namefagging them and costing them a shit load of money in legal fees.

My word. Well, isn't that an annoyance. I am oddly pleased that Ms Coulter (who I haven't heard of) would use our protests as her example why this proposed legislation is unjust. When it comes down to it though, we aren't "abusive or insulting in relation to matters held sacred by any religion".

Bertie Ahern resigned as Taoiseach and as leader of Fianna Fáil a year ago. This law was proposed by Dermot Ahern. They aren't related.

Bizarrely enough, I think this law can be traced to a 'Note of Dissent' two commissioners of the Law Commission of England and Wales wrote in 1981 to its Report No.145, entitled Criminal Law Offence Against Religion and Public Worship, advocating the enactment of a new offence which 'would penalise anyone who published grossly abusive or insulting material relating to religion with the purpose of outraging religious feeling' Why is Ireland adopting obscure suggestions for laws proposed by English Law Commissioners thirty years ago?
