I'm a new poster who has come here because of the ad campaign that we have been seeing on So You Think You Can Dance. My son loves them, thinks they are terribly clever, and told me he wants to learn more about Scientology. I beat him to it, which is why I'm posting here now.

The "org" scares the c*** out of me; and I'm concerned that this is going to have a really positive effect on other young people as well. The commercials he's enamored with are here.

Is the CoS in the middle of some kind of major ad campaign? I think there needs to be a concerted effort to warn parents, particularly Christian parents, about these ads. They are directly targeting those with a higher moral sense.

Tell him to look at this site, then xenu.net, before checking out the scientology site, which will spam him for the rest of his life if they get his IP address or any personal details. If he wants to look at the scientology site, have him do it from a public library and give out ABSOLUTELY NO PERSONAL INFORMATION.

Think about it, you're seeing an ad on TV or on a website, where do you go to find out more information? That's right, google or wiki. And guess what's gonna come up after the official crap?

I know that Christians don't like the vulgarity of South Park, but please let him watch this one episode about Scientology in which South Park basically tells the whole world about what they believe in, which is true (Scientology has got the episode banned in Britain). I think the truly dangerous thing about these ads is not that they are going to encourage kids to hop on the computer and google scientology. In fact is if they do look up the website they will go straight to "thewaytohappiness.org"; the commercials don't mention scientology. I think it will simply leave a positive impression on their minds - a feeling that "this is something good". So strolling down the street and down by the friendly neighborhood scientology center, they see the logo for the way to happiness and think, yeah - hey I think I'll stop in. I want to be happy!

Such is the nature of advertising. It's good that you're concerned and that your son is comfortable talking to you about these things. I would encourage him to learn more, and not just from scientology sites obviously. Most importantly, talk to him about it. Find out why he's so interested in it and help him to see that Scientology doesn't really provide many answers in life. Whatever you do, don't forbid him from learning about it. Because then you make it taboo, and nothing is sexier to a 16 year old than the forbidden.

Well, we're Catholics ;) so South Park isn't verbotten...it's the best satire on TV! So get this, he saw the South Park episode and he still came away with a positive impression after seeing the commercials.

I think we'll re-watch it, though.
