Mostly, I see stories on the internet of people who were in scientology for a long time. Thought I would share my story - long, long time ago, I was in for a short time...

- How I came to be a scientologist for four months
* No real names or places are used in this story. I have changed names to best fit the nature of people and places involved as I perceive them now.
* The only truths in this story would be subjective truths. If you want hard facts that will serve to incriminate scientology or any of its members then don't bother reading my story.

+ My induction into scientology was through a place called Woodicks & Associates, Tustonia, Colliefornika circa the cusp of 1980's - 1990's
+ My registrars name was Stevie Marcheesy.
+ My reason for contacting Marcheesy:
~ I needed to find out what the hell an 'SP' was as my girlfriend had just broken up with me. Her scientologist brother-in-law had finished telling us a spontaneous, bizarre story about some kind of personality types he referred to as 'SP' and 'PTS'. I thought he was making fun of my girlfriend and I by telling his crazed story and thought I would play along. I said something like, 'well she must be an SP and I must be a PTS.' After saying that she started crying and stormed into the bedroom. He got a shocked look on his face and left without another word.

When I went into the bedroom, she was packing her stuff to leave after about a two and half year relationship. She said I had probably just destroyed her life, had something to do with possible disconnection because I had labeled her an SP??? Later, I found out she was an ex-scientologist but at this time I didn't know she had any connection to scientology other than being related to her sister. She had kept her scientology past a secret.

- My background with scientology at the time:
~ I didn't give one god-damn about scientology nor did I know much about it. About all I knew was that my girlfriends sister and brother-in-law were into scientology and knew he had a bunch of books relating to it but I had no idea what that meant. I thought it was like some kind of metaphysical Dale Carnegie course. I had never seen an article or anything on TV about scientology, had not heard of L Ron Hubbard, not even as a science fiction writer.

- How I came to visit Woodicks & Assoc.:
~ I called my girlfriends brother-in-law to try to find out what the hell was going on with this 'SP' shit and my girlfriend leaving as she wouldn't talk to me about it. He said he knew a guy who could explain it better than him, that I should stop by his house and he would drive me from there to talk to this guy. I did as he suggested. He drove me over there, introduced us and dropped me off (leaving me in a situation where I had no car and no phone) He did not offer to come back and pick me up which seemed odd to me.

- My general impression of the place:
~ I am looking around thinking, what a cheesy, wierd looking place with all the garish science fiction looking posters and maybe a picture of Tom Cruise and John Travolta here and there - had no idea at the time that they were members.

- My ruin
~ I went there to get a question answered but instead, this Marcheesy guy brought me to my ruin. I literally broke down and cried. I am sure it wasn't that hard for him to do as I had problems with depression and he had ESP or something because he seemed to know all this stuff about me. I forgot the reason I was there but wanted to leave as this was getting really creepy and I was starting to feel strange, kind of light headed - but had no car.

- My personality:
~ At the time, easy going - open minded to the point of being in danger of having my brains spill out of my head. Most my friends were new age types and because of that fact, I was used to a high degree of wierdness in my life. Don't know why that was, I did not seek out new ager's they just seemed to gravitate toward me. I didn't 'believe' in anything but tried to be open minded so as to get along with the people I knew whether they channeled, talked to animals, read palms or tarot cards, rebirthed or had friends in the space brotherhood.

~ What would be presented to me next would sound somewhat familiar to new age ideas and some of the people I knew had talked about things like this but I had not given any serious thought to what they said.

- First steps to becoming a scientologist:
~ After being ruined, Marcheesy explained that we/him/I are souls completely separate from our body blah,blah,blah I am the soul not the body, only scientology has the tech to fix me(soul man) blah, blah, blah what would that be worth to me blah,blah,blah you can't put a price tag on it blah,blah,blah let's shake on it blah, blah, blah scientology will save me the soul man from spiraling into total oblivion blah,blah,blah before I have any time to think about it, Marcheesy sits and quickly jots down some figures hands them to me, I laugh hysterically while eyeing the door. He moves to the door and unbeknownst to me, I am on my way to becoming a card carrying scientologist.

- Further steps to becoming a scientologist:
~ Well where will you get the money now that you have agreed(by shaking hands wih Marcheesy) to pay for these services? This is when it really starts to get creepy as I tell him something like well let me think about it, I'll get back to you...
NO. You need to figure out how you are going to get the money. Here list your bank accounts. I list one account, with about $2500 in it figuring I am not going to get out of here now without spending some money. I see the communcations course he has listed a price for maybe around $1500 and think well hell, I will offer to buy this course to get this guy out of my hair. Damn, Marcheesy maybe has ESP. He doesn't let up he knows I have more accounts, he is even able to guess within about $1000 the amounts I have in these accounts. I am wondering, did my girlfriend discuss my accounts with her sister and this info got back to this guy?

~ All my life up until this time, I have been of one mind but now I am of my one original self(is this what he calls the reactive mind?) and an imaginary mind that is the spirit/soul self Marcheesy insists we all have. Marcheesy is talking to that imaginary spirit/soul guy and not to my original self who now it seems I am no longer supposed to trust.

~ What an amazing thing, I half believed it enough to be confused and had this feeling of fighting against myself. Hard to explain but I was sort of having an out of body sensation or at least felt kind of numb or shocked or something. I was shocked that anyone would treat me this way. It was the first and last time it ever happened.

~ I think in reality though at this point, my head is now so far up my ass that all I can see is shit and Marcheesy is telling me this stuff doesn't stink. Think by this time maybe they had taken me up to the notary public upstairs to make sure I signed some kind of promissory note to scientology for the full amount Marcheesy said it would cost to fix my soul and to have my signature witnessed by a notary. At this point, I was starting to wonder if I was on an LSD trip or something as I could not believe what was happening. I couldn't believe I was just passively going along with this but I was.

- Marcheesy takes me home to his house:
~ Marcheesy was afraid my 'reactive mind' would kick in and I might back out plus he believed the universe has a tendency to send SP's and so forth to stop people like me, who had just made such a wonderful decision to get fixed by scientology. He strongly suggested I go with him. Now I did have a choice, I could have pushed it, maybe cold cocked the guy or something, I was probably stronger than him but he was younger and I am not so sure who would have came out ahead. Also, he impressed me as the kind of guy who might be carrying a gun - so what the fuck, I stayed at his house that night.

~ Leasha Gallstone magically arrives at the Marcheesy house bright and early to pick me up and take me to their money.
Marcheesey and Gallstone herded me into her car. Gallstone and I head over to get their money from the financial instution I had been keeping it in. The money was in a type of account where set policy was that it would not be released immediately and much to my surprise Leasha Gallstone started screaming at the people who managed the money that I had assigned to scientology. I wanted to crawl in a hole and die but there was no hole to crawl in.

~ We didn't get their money that day much to the chagrin of Marcheesy and Gallstone. As I recall, Marcheesy ran me over (not literally) to see his boss, Eclaire Woodicks and I signed some more shitty paperwork, something called an assignment of funds I think. Think they were maybe afraid I would try to back out but by this time, I was just scared as I think my brains had fallen out.

~ To make a long story short, they got the fucking money they wanted, and I got services resembling those of some ancient taylors who fashioned clothes for an emperor that only he could see.

~ It was my own fault as I could have said no. Started taking some the crazy ass communication course, hating myself every minute. From day one, I started scheming as to how I was going to get out of this situation I got myself into. At the same time I started feeling like, wow these people really love me as everyone treated me so nice. Once again, I had this sense of be split between who I was all my life and this new soul self that everyone around me recognized and seemed to love. Maybe they were my friends. Maybe I didn't make a collosal misktake, at this point, it felt like my only hope.

I whistled for a cab and when it came near, the license plate said fresh, and had the dice in the mirror.
