Someone talked to Verizon/GTE today, to verify that scientology purchased, owns and operates a Verizon/GTE phone system. The local PBX (Phone exchange) is physically located at Gold Base! A local Verizon employee was asked how hard it was to listen in on other phone calls from this system, and the employee answered not hard, with the right equipment.

It's not at all weird that an organization of this size has its own PBX (Private Branch Exchange).

There are a few caveats about this Anons should be familiar with though.

The biggest one is that Caller ID blocking is useless as a security measure. Prepending your call with *67 doesn't actually "block" your number.

What is really does is set a flag that, in essence, "requests" Caller ID blocking. The originating phone number is still passed along through CCIS, and blocking it or not is left to the receiving switch. Which means that if you think Caller ID blocking buys you any kind of anonymity or security, you don't know how the system works.

It also opens them up to all kinds of massive vulnerabilities if they have inadequate security on their PBX set-up. Private PBX's and VM systems are often attack vectors for phreakers.

1. Owning a PBX system (most mid- to large-sized companies own one) does not give you access to the entire area code or prefix. If the company is large enough to "own" a prefix, no other company has phones with that prefix. They can't listen in on Wal-mart calls, for example. They could, potentially, listen in on phones within their PBX system only...their employees, no one outside of their PBX. "Joe's Hotels" may have the same prefix as other nearby businesses. AT&T, IBM, etc. would not share their prefixes with others - due to size.

3. This is landline only. Their wireless is not through Verizon.

4. PBX isn't directly related to Caller ID - blocked or not. It's a third-party application that would need to be owned/involved. There is no global "fact" re: whether they can see a blocked call or not. It depends on the software.

Scientology's PBX is landline, not mobile/wireless.

Believe it or not, Scientology is nowhere near Verizon's biggest B2B customer, either. They wouldn't block a site just because a customer asked.

last but not least, lots of places have their own in-house phone system. Flag Land Base has for long had a pbx for example. Per the St. Pete Times awhile back
