As it goes, I *can* imagine being friends with other community members who happen to be child molesters, or furries, or NAZIs, or hippies, or canadian. But it's a particularly icky thought.

Hugging such people in a very public arena, (while being aware they were one of those ^^^ ) I'd recognize it as a tacit statement of support.

That one can imagine, doesn't necessarily make it better.

I'm not sure how the naming conventions work where you live,
but as names are interpreted in the US- Herro is correct.

In Deutsche, Buettner, Buttner, Büttner - might be considered variations of the same name.

In English, they are different names. It is entirely possible that these three names could be used to the same person. It's possible that "B*ttner the Scilon" is the same man as "B*ttner the Stone-sucker".

But the names are not the same. One person may use different names (e.g. on WWP, IRL) and persons with foreign-sourced names may use different transliteration conventions from time to time.

But Jonathan Buettner, and Jonathan Buttner - are not the same name (by convention in the US)

I do not think this question can ever be fully resolved, because even if we did ask "B*ttner the Stone-sucker" if he were a Scilon, nobody would believe if he denied it.

So. Asserting that he's a scilon is unfalsifiable. So.

Just a thought--
PDA of any kind in a place of government affairs is usually only shared between families with the whole rules of being appropriate.
I agree, however, it doesn't matter who initiated-
the fact that they did hug is enough to look at.
The only place I could picture free hugs flying around in a government building would be Hawaii.

Just for comparison - in the UK, where you end up working with loads of Europeans, it's not unknown to find someone who gets email as -u----, spells their name -ue----- (if you ask), and will be uncomfortably grateful if you bother to type -ü----- (as per their name in whatever godawful country they've escaped from).

However, all the instances of that I've encountered def did not have an English accent.

Lothar was raging at those who lacked empathy for 'people who happen to be friends with scilons'.

I wanted to point out to him, that such lack of empathy was- for better or worse, fairly normative around here.

For counterpoint, I picked someone who- if not empathy, seems at least to go to considerable lengths to understand and to value the worth of 'people who happen to be friends with scilons'.

Since scilons are people too.

I suggest: If you'd prefer not to be seen as the poster boy for efforts to humanize toasters- stop trying to humanize toasters.

Also, it's absurd that anyone would have to humanize them in the first place. Last time I checked, they're people like anyone else.

Why does this matter? Because when you dehumanize them, you start seeing them as a faceless, one dimensional enemy and the effectiveness of your ability to communicate with them and to get them to question what they believe is diminished. In the end you're making what you're trying to do more difficult.

Look, if people want to rip on scientologists, that's fine. I don't really give a fuck. I'm just saying that it leads to thinking and action that is counter productive to say the least.

And of course if you dehumanize these people, you take the first step on the road to becoming what the church wants to portray you as.

It absolutely makes a difference on who initiated the hug.

Hard to believe some of you can't see that..of course I can understand why some of you don't , i.e. Herro/Snake.

Catherine Fraser is walking by. Sees Stone's wife. Beelines to Stone's wife. She does not initiate the hug. In fact, she seems a little hesitant and waiting on whatever response from Stone's wife - perhaps she didn't want to interrupt a conversation Stone' wife was having at the moment. Stone's wife initiates it. It shows a great familiarity. I wish we could see for sure if they did the kiss on the cheek gesture. It looks like that might have happened but really can't tell.

This was not a case of a politician's wife standing in a hallway and some constituent initiating a hug and to be polite said wife reciprocates.

Get it???!

How many constituents did Stone's wife hug in the hallway that day?
Did she hug anyone from Anonymous?

And for those that are ridiculously pointing out that people shouldn't be saying anything just because Stone's wife is friends with the person leading the campaign for the ordinance - WTFH????
