Scientology has paid lot of attention to Britney for the last year:

No worries, it's not really all about Britney: January theme should be about how Scientology tried you to get suck in. Stress test. Sending personality test by mail. Narconon/Criminon/Second Chance. A friend talking to you about a "wonderful" self-help therapy. Selling Dianetics in library. WISE meeting. Celebrity Centre. Contacting artists. Ask people in the street what they are thinking about Scientology, and - thanks partly to our wonderful job - people will tell you how sick this cult is. Scilons aren't crazy: they'll take other means to get you in this cult without saying you are, in fact, getting in scientology. We have to inform people on those others way they'll try to suck you in. This lulzy theme will catch everyone's attention, and I'm sure lots of madia are going to talk about it because of this Britney reference. Mixed feelings. I understand the PR angle. But it would make sense, IMHO, only if connected with a "preying on weak(ened) people" (narconon, criminon, children, etc.).

You could also tie in the fact that scientology deliberately targets celebrites for the PR and money angle (can't remember the quote exactly but there was one), and that celebrities get special treatment away from regular scientologists, don't get sent to RPF, etc. Many celebrities are in fact very vulnerable and insecure and the hope and refuge that Scientology gives them (through the celebrity centres etc) could fit the overall concept.
There's a great quote in The Complex, too, bottom of p252, after Tom Cruise was presented with the 'medal of valor', and Miscavige's statement that it was 'to the most dedicated scientologist I have ever met': "On the way home, I thought how remarkable it was that Cruise had actually 'come out' and publicly proclaimed his dedication to the religion. He had been in the Church since 1986, the same year that I finished my EPF, but he had never previously been so vocal. I later found out it was because he was ecstatic after completing OT VII, under the direct tutelage of David Miscavige. As I thought about the medal he'd received I was taken aback that Cruise, who had after all lived an incredibly privileged life and had never had to suffer the indignity of being a Sea Org or Staff member, could gain such aplomb only because he had a lot of money and had the eyes of the world on him . We had lived on so little, had no privacy, no time to chill out; we were in fear or under stress all the time and we were not as dedicated as Cruise? That hurt. |

'as if britney didn't have enough problems' 'Cruise & Spears = your role models?' Britney = a new cash cow for davey boy!!! I can see how this works though: a troubled celeb. needing guidance & tom etc. are there to provide guidance...can we has an estimate of her wealth now & do it again in 6 months time to demonstrate how teh cult drains fundz??? |
