I have the theory that no person will venture into Scientology after a PhD. Philosophy, which includes the processes of research for the truth, critical thinking, creative thinking, publish, debate, logical conclusions, is very much against the way of Scientology.

There may be exceptions, but we can look up their thesis to see if they deserve it.

Not that PhD's are big deals. Forum contributors are very critical and very creative :D

In a way this proves that Scientology is not a philosophy, not the kind that the rest of the world defines.

I knew several chiropractors and one dentist when I was in.

And I know of at least one person with an MA who is a scientolgist. It's in education and this person works in Applied Scholastics so well educated people can get hooked on this nonsense, and their education and intelligence just makes them that much better at justifying their beliefs.

But I would be willing to bet that no scientologist does serious, peer reviewed science. After all, there is no science in scientology.

Technically PhD means a doctor of philosophy hence the letters. it's an antiquated way of saying things though. A PhD in Mathematics would be a doctor of philosophy in mathematics or a doctor of the philosophy of mathematics or something like that. Anyway, i think critical thinking would help keep you out of Scientology but also some sort of support structure like family and friends.

The overwhelming majority of Scientologists (I believe) do not even have a BA/BSc degree. There are a few crackpot "doctors," yes, but very few.

i've tried debating science with scientologists.

they tend to fail utterly and ignore your arguments. they have no good response for why scientology's claims have not been independently peer-reviewed by a study from a major university or medical school. they also tend to argue that their anecdotal evidence is somehow superior or at least equivalent to data gained from such a study.

Critical forum contributors are critical. But peer review and criticism are part of the deal.

I'm a wog doing a word clearing for you. PhD is really about philosophy, even though the candidates need not worry about it. You have BSc, BA, MSc, MA, but all end up in PhD. It doesn't matter what you do, it's the way you do it.

Except for medical doctor, which have nothing to do with philosophy. They need not publish anything, accept no peer review and criticism. (To may patients they behave like god.) That explains you can name quite a number of scientologists that are doctors.

With respect to any doctors and dentists reading, it's not necessarily a professional requirement to have broad critical thinking skills. Analytical thinking in narrow terms of diagnosing or a patient, sure. In the same a car mechanic would track down engine troubles or a computer tech ferrets out a faulty driver. You solve (or least you appear to solve) the problem, but that doesn't necessarily mean you understand the cause.

I think in the case of professionals who are a Scientologists, it's a combination of blind acceptance and false positives or masked symptoms. A mechanic is presented with some strange knocking sound from a car. He turns up the car's stereo. Hey! We can't hear the knocking anymore, the problem must therefore lay in the volume knob. Radio Tech works and it helps cars. Same goes for the Scientologist. They apply Tech, and hey! they're getting results!

Remember that Hubbard and his successors cribbed from a lot of sources, and they got enough pseudo self-help science going that you're probably going to see some kind of positive result, even if it's just baseless self-confidence in your ability to do X. It's folly to dismiss Tech as a total scam; it's just MOSTLY a scam. But there's enough meat there to keep people coming back, even though they could get the same or better skills training elsewhere cheaper and without Kool-Aid.

While some dentists and chiropractors do continue on to earn their MD's most chiropractors and dentists aren't MD's. This isn't to say that either of these groups aren't sufficiently educated to provide their services but their training is considerably different than that of say, an oncologist. These fields are almost like cults onto themselves. Maybe that's part of why scientology focus's in on them the way that they do.

Too bad for the clams that they have to be so honked off about the evil psychs. If there was ever a subculture ripe for climbing aboard the bridge it would have to be the psychologists. Epic FAIL.

That is certainly true, and was true when I was involved in the COS in the early 1980s.

There are exceptions. One OSA guy I knew had a degree in philosophy from the University of California -- Davis. I was surprised.

If you read any history of Dianetics and Scientology, you will learn that in the very early Dianetics and Scientology days the average Dianeticist / Scientologist was much more educated than later on.

My theory, which I think is born out by the history of this COS, is that Hubbard was terribly insecure and declared (kicked out) anyone who was competent who he thought might challenge him or pose a threat.

The COS was and is run very much like a tribe of chimpanzees or baboons. You see the same thing in DM today -- e.g., dismantling RTC, declaring his lieutenants, not designating any real second in command or successor, busting anyone who appears to get too strong or too popular.
