Re: MARCAB INVASION II - SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON 2009
Quote:
We cannot hand out stuff on convention grounds. Comic-Con staff and security made it very clear that if we were caught handing stuff out on convention center property (and this includes dropping YFTC's in the bathrooms or the usual stuff we do) that we would be escorted off the grounds, have our badges confiscated, possibly get arrested by the harbor police, and have the cards at the freebie table removed. We did everything we could last year to reach the public, and we're doing more this year with the ad placement. The only way we'd get more people interested is with a booth, but the money spent on a booth is better spent on advertising the way we did this year and will do this year. Anonymous! ITT: A bunch of faggots who haven't talked to Comic-Con staff trying to tell those who have what should happen..... without knowing the rules of the game.
Which you all just lost! Srsly though, getting us b& by Comic-Con staff isn't going to help things. Lets play nice with the people in charge and follow the rules they set huh? |

But a small ad in a magazine in a bag with tons of crap is a lot of money for something most people will chuck out or not notice. People at comic con get a TON of crap. Getting an ad, putting cards on the table and especially handing out fliers and cards outside are all good. (this was one to one communication with masks on...so people were more likely to remember it) But cards on a table or or an ad will not be remembered. You must think outside the box, here. |

I was disappointed in last year's raid, and want to prevent a repeat. We we're all told it would be EPIC, and it was not. I asked to help before and during, and the cell was too disorganized to get their act together to get back to me. Perhaps this year will be different. |

Re: MARCAB INVASION II - SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON 2009
If you think people as steeped in the geek culture as the ones who go to Comic-Con aren't receptive to getting viral marketing, then I seriously doubt you've ever been to Comic-Con.
If you're out front wearing a Scientology Kills shirt and handing out anti-scilon shit then of COURSE people will ignore you and it's no different than an actual raid. There are plenty of religious and political and activist whackos outside the convention. This is why you hand out YFTC's while wearing a guy fawkes mask instead - because it's viral and people are interested. This is why it went so well last year. Ask anyone who handed out cards last year - they spent about half the time posing for pictures and answering questions as they did handing out cards. People at comic-con are alot more receptive if you play it right than passerby on the street during a typical raid. Now as far as how you can promote stuff inside the con if you aren't a vendor, according to Con security and staff, you can wear a shirt that says anything you like. "Marvel Sucks" "Republicans are evil" etc. But beyond that, on convention center grounds you cannot promote an activist cause, which is what YFTC is. We came up with YouFoundTheComic specifically to counter this and spread the word to people at Comic-Con. We can promote a comic promoting the cause, but we cannot promote the cause itself. Alot of people decided not to donate or help out last year because it didn't fit the same definition of epic as what happens at raids. This is true - I'll be the first to admit it. Outside the con, we can attract all the attention we want. Inside the convention, we can't attract any attention. This comes straight from CCI staff and the people that helped me out last year had their neck on the line when Scientology did everything they could to get the cards pulled. Do you want to reach people, or do you want to be an attention whore? There's no reason you can't do both :D This was a huge issue last year. I'm not trying to say that there shouldn't be raids at CCI or the org downtown while we're there or walking around in suits and guy fawkes masks inside the convention. (Guy fawkes masks are everywhere because they're a cheap accessory to the festivities of the con.) Do whatever you want inside or outside the con - just please don't do anything that jeapordizes what we have going on inside the convention in the form of the cards and the ad. Fair enough? Handing out YFTC's or actively raiding just like a normal global ON CONVENTION GROUNDS jeapordizes that. Three if us almost ended up in the back of a cop car and the cards nearly got pulled before the convention officially started specifically because of this. One of the reasons we do the cards and are doing the ad is specifically because things never go to plan the way you expect them to - it takes care of itself nearly independant of what other people decide to do or not. I'm at Comic-Con - I'm glad to pass out cards, but if anyone thinks I'm not going to have fun at the convention, they're crazy and I would expect the same of anyone else who has a membership. Just help out with passing out cards if you can and want to, but if you do, it has to be according to the rules (Not rules I made up to be an ass, but rules that are from Comic-Con staff, convention center security, and the SDPD and Harbor Police.) Helpful: Hey have you guys thought of X, Y, or Z instead of or in addition to what you are planning, cause that would be cool. Also, B and C of your plan SUCK why not try D and E modifications? Also, Point F is just a waste and faggy imo, but maybe G is less faggy... Bawwwing Faggotry: I don't like how it went last year, my ego wasn't stroked enough... I have no real helpful suggestions or constructive criticism... I just want to baw about how I could do it better, but I won't get off my ass to plan anything, or think up anything I just like to bawwwwww. see the difference? One makes the raid better, then other is faggotry. Real criticism is encouraged. |

I don't do that. I don't know why you assume that. HBO did great viral marketing last year for TrueBlood. We don't have the budget for what they did, but I am sure something cool could be done with a smaller budget. STICKING CARDS ON A TABLE is not viral marketing. Nor is putting an ad in a catalog. If you are planning something else, and just not mentioning it, then ok. Quote:

Again, no one has suggested ANYTHING that would get people kicked out. I mentioned people dressed the same walking together in a pack. That will get people taking pics and is not frowned upon. Just have to dress in a funny or interesting manner. Quote:
I support the ad and the cards. But the ad will be ignored my most people. You know it is true. The cards on the table are ok. But as I said before, the people outside the con make the biggest impression..because they are real and can talk and be funny. |

Re: MARCAB INVASION II - SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON 2009
I honestly don't know what else Snake or anyone who felt like it was fail could have expected, then.
It's not as fun as stepping out on a bridge with the Shoop megaphone and chanting "DAVID MISCAVIGE BEATS HIS STAFF" or dancing with music or getting into it with a handler. It was never supposed to be, and it was never represented as such. The plans were public for weeks and hammered out before the convention. We would have loved to had skywriting, a banner plane, an ad truck, billboard, etc, but ultimately it would have reached less people and cost more money than what was in the budget. Yes, we looked into all these options. Give us $15,000 instead of $1,500 and I guarantee you we'd be able to do more. Everyone involved got into several arguments in the months and weeks before regarding how they felt it should have been done, how it should have gone this way, how we should have done this, etc. People know what we're doing this year like they did last year. If they agree with it what we're doing with the money and think it's a good idea then they'll pitch in financially. If they agree that getting a group to hand out ten thousand business cards outside the con is a good idea, they'll help. If they don't think either is a good idea, they won't do either. That's fine, it's the way ideas get pruned into epic and stupid. As far as organizing so out of town anons can help or do something, I'm all for it, considering that yes, we were a bit lacking in that regard last year. I'd love to be part of stuff outside the con, if anyone else wants to organize raids off convention center property beyond handing stuff out by the trolley station like we did last year. The convention is two months away - we have alot of time to plan that specific aspect. And my response? Why should it fall on me to organize it? If you felt I did a fail job at that last year, then feel free to organize it instead. I didn't even organize half of that last year because I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off to keep the cards from getting pulled. Other anons organized the raid on the Org, I had nothing to do with it. Anonymous! Help us reach 150,000 people at Comic Con 2009 with the Marcab Invasion! We need your help! |
