THE push for a Senate investigation into the Church of Scientology has stalled, with both main parties reluctant to support the move.

Yesterday a motion by independent senator Nick Xenophon for an inquiry into the group was pushed back another day, continuing a pattern that began on Monday.

It is believed that the South Australian independent is keen to bring the motion to a vote only once he has been given an indication either way by the main parties. Church president Vicki Dunstan criticised the push for an inquiry. ''This is a witch-hunt,'' she told The Age.

Senator Xenophon last week tabled letters from former church members citing forced abortions, forced labour, child abuse, extortion and intimidation. Earlier in the week he indicated he would continue pushing for an inquiry, even without the Senate's initial support.

SO, if they keep delaying the vote should we assume that the clams have their slimy suckers deep into the members of the Senate? (on both sides for safety?) There is no way any right thinking person can listen to the stuff going down (McBride and Aaron) and NOT want to investigate...unless they've been IRS'd by the cult...so...what is the cult holding over the heads of key people who could push the vote?

While taking that next step towards bringing a bawwfest down on their heads, with Scientology howling about religious persecution might be seen as risky, the stories will keep coming out until someone, somewhere, will have to say ENOUGH! It will be investigated.

The delay might simply be due to the sudden inpouring of letters and emails from former members and loved ones, as well as an inundation from cult defenders. All of these must be considered.

I think the difference between the heartfelt pleas of the victims and the cookie cutter sameness of the culties' messages will be noticed.

We have a month to continue educating Australia's politicians. Once they see the true face of Scientology through victims' eyes, it will be very hard to turn away from it.

There are cowardly politicians who will want to shove it aside, make it a problem for the next guy in office. If nothing else, the vote to investigate will expose them. Representing the people is not all ribbon cutting and baby kissing. Sometimes the job requires one to make courageous, bold decisions. Now is one of those times.

Let's get the notion of "religion" out of the equation. When people quit seeing Scientology as religion, a whole lot of preconceived notions fly out the window. When you're left with a multi-level marketing scam that defrauds and controls people for profit, there is no reason to hold back on bringing Scientology to justice.

Scientology needs to be shucked out of its shell of religious protection!

In 1983, the Australian courts determined that Organised Scientology IS a religion, EVEN if the upper echelons did not regard it as such.

The ONLY requirement under Australian Law for it to be a 'religion' was that it was a system of belief, and that most of it's adherants percieved it as such.

My take in my emails has been that, even if it IS a religion according to Australian Law, that just demonstrates that being a 'religion' shouldn't be enough to get preferential treatment - it should also be required that it is not involved in criminal activities.

(You could also make a case that it should not be 'socially destructive' or something, I didn't argue that angle)

Basically, so what if it IS a religion (according to whatever legal definition) - look at all the shit they get up to. It's going to be easier to get lawmakers to change the law to remove their tax benifits based on criminality, that by changing the law to somehow narrow the definition of what is a religion.

I know if I was a lawmaker, setting out to define what is/isn't a religion would sound like a really bad idea politically. Setting out to stop criminals getting taxbreaks sounds more like it.

If Xenophon sat down with the major parties and re-worked his motion slightly, they might yet get a motion everyone could support.

But since the motion was first tabled, there has been no time for that. I am relaxed since the Labor party has certainly not said 'no' - but they have been basically totally focussed on major carbon emission trading laws since Monday.

The High Court ruling said that Scientology is a religion. It did not consider whether the Church of Scientology is a religious organization - this was assumed, and the judges pointed out this was not necessarily a correct assumption.

'Religions' per se, are not subject to taxation in any event, only legal entities are, or are not, taxed. The ruling should be read with that in mind.

Could be the U.S. State Department, Obama, are running interference for them. Like Scientology as described on the Senate table, is something that the USA wants established throughout the world. After all if forced abortions, forced suicides, human trafficking and slave labor is the religious norm in Australia, then when all this is found out in the United States, it won't seem so bad....?

If they let this slide, it's a big fat message to all other organized criminals out there that they can start using religion as a shield. If the senate is smart, they won't let it slide. If they do, well cartels and mafiosos might want to take note. Here's a way to shield yourself from the law.

I think you may be weaving a too complicated explanation.

How about this: Somebody owes a favor to a Scientologist, and lets OSA write some letters which that somebody signs his/her name on. Favor no longer owed.

Also remember people, that right now the coalition is tearing itself apart.

Yesterday there were MASS RESIGNATIONS from the coalition front benches in both houses.

So, we won't be able to get a clear picture of whether this issue is being avoided, or alternatively eclipsed by the climate change debate (and the giant rift it's opened up in the Coalition), until that starts to die down.

I tend to think it's the latter, but I'm an optimist like that.

Also, if another leadership spill occurs, we could likely see Tony Abbott take over from Malcolm Turnbull - and he's staunch anti-abortion (and putting aside his generally barf-worthy, regressive social policies - is something to consider when sending harpoons).
