Ethercat's Update:
DeKalb County says we can protest on April 12.

I went to a meeting today with officers from DeKalb County. Present was Major Rancifer, Lt. Moore, and Lt. Thomas, and me. Oh, and a woman I assumed to be a stenographer who sat quietly in the corner and took down (presumably) everything that was said.

I am tired, so I'll just give the basics in this post, then another day, I'll probably be more conversational about what occurred today. I do have more to share, but it may be a few days before I can write it up.

Important part first: Their legal department is still researching the law regarding the permit issue, but Major Rancifer said that we can go ahead with the protest with no worries about a permit this time. He said that he understands that we need to be able to plan ahead of time.

He said that if the legal team determines between now and April 12 that a permit is required, that we can go ahead and protest without it, and if anything comes up about it, he will take responsibility for having told us we could protest without it this time.

2nd most important thing: Be at the N. Shallowford Rd. org at 12 noon. Either Lt. Moore or Lt. White will give us a briefing on what is allowed and what is not. They emphasize that this is not a Q&A session, they may answer a few questions, but their intent is to give us the rules ahead of time. Masks are an issue with them, as are disguises that conceal your identity from them. I believe they understand why people want to conceal their identities, and they don't view you as bad because you're trying to conceal who you are, but the law is the law and they are supposed to enforce it. They have concerns over us not knowing who each other are, too.

I explained that I think many of the people who protest don't read the board on a day to day basis; they just find out when and where, then show up. I asked Lt. Moore if he would be willing, at the briefing, to point out anyone who he has concern over, with regard to concealment, and give them the option to uncover, rather than be arrested with no warning later. He said that was fair. So if you think you might be hidden too much, show up for this briefing at noon, and find out early, rather than when it is too late.

Noise: We need to keep it down because of the apartments and/or condos behind us and the elderly care center that shares the complex with the org.

If you have other questions or concerns, please call Major Rancifer at the number Gumby gave above. The meetings Gumby and I have had have made a difference in the way they view us, and they emphasized that if this type of communication had been occurring all along, we would not have had the problems we have had so far. So I would like to encourage anyone who can to meet with them, or at least speak to them. I got the impression that the more of us they can get to know somewhat, the more comfortable they will be with us. I gave them my real name, and I don't think they will give anyone's name to the scientologists. They did not ask me for ID to sit and talk.

I'll follow up tomorrow with phone numbers, which I do not have at hand at the moment, unless someone else posts them first.

From what I could determine from the police, the issue wasn't the dust masks per se so much as people who had nearly/all of their face covered. As the pollen count and smog index is incredibly high in the Atlanta area, there is no legal grounds they would have in the way of forcibly removing dust and/or surgical masks. The issue was people who had masks, hats, and sunglasses.

I guess the best thing to do is pick and choose what you hide, keeping in mind you don't want to get hauled off by police OR Id'd by Scinos. I did the wig/sunglasses combo and they didn't seem to mind. Wig/mask or mask/sunglasses is probably fine.

For the Atlanta Police, I suggest someone takes the time to assemble a little presentation with links on Fair Game and recent Scientologist actions (like that guy in Clearwater they stalked) or I think a few Scifags got arrests in Australia. Cover all that and maybe also touch on the Scifag belief that we're all being controlled by the Nazi Commies on behalf of some alien invasion fleet or whatever crap they're spouting.

If someone wants to brave I'd suggest arranging a sit down with maybe the Chief of Police and the riot squad commander to talk to them this about that, show screenshots the like. Make it clear you don't want trouble with the cops, you don't want to hide from them, etc. Make it clear you're hiding your faces because of worries that the Scifags are fucking nuts (the alien invasion crap) and will come after you for exercising your right to free speech.

You know damn well that the Scifags have been feeding bullshit to the police about these protests, claiming people want to kill them and bomb their churches and all that crap. Take some time to present a well thought out and polite counter view. I sat down with the local cops three days before the protest and talked and they were very cool with the masks and told us to report anyone who tried to follow us and they'd handle it, etc.

Use Taco Bell as a landmark, DO NOT USE IT AS A MEETING POINT except maybe privately amongst a group of friends. This confuses people into parking at Taco Bell. The official meeting point needs to be IN FRONT OF THE CHURCH.

Buffalo Anon here. We had some problems with protest permits also. They're not required in Buffalo, but police decided at 3pm that ours had "expired".

Call a politician or talk to chief of police, and get a statement about the ordinance concerning protest permits. GET THIS NOTARIZED BY A NOTARY PUBLIC. A Notary Public is an official who will stamp a document or statement as "sworn true to me" etc. This serves as proof of the law. Unfortunately, regardless of the law, if the 5-0 ask you to leave, you have to leave. I hope the guys who were V& are okay!

If someone gets a hold of him they need to make absolutely sure that if he shows up he needs to realize that we ARE NOT protesting the DeKalb PD and that if he does he will not be made welcome. Seriously guys, talk to your local chapter of the ACLU for help. We have a guy from the NYCLU in NYC and he's been invaluable in helping us deal with the police properly.

And yeah, if you guys have a fund set-up to help out the arrestedfags NYC is gonna donate what's leftover out of our Raid Fund once 4/12 is payed for.

I think, at least in Atlanta, it would be easiest to get everyone in suits (as a good 1/3 of the people there had them on already anyway). Steve & Barry's has "tux tees" for $8, and a cheap suit at Goodwill would probably run you no more than $20 for a shirt, blazer, and slacks.

I am NOT in favor of anything that could be interpreted as aggressive or rash, such as showing up in droves for a protesting permit. We need to keep a level head here and use legal, just means. We have to work in the system and not against it. We're battling the Church of Scientology here, not the Georgia/US government. Continuing to write letters/emails and make calm, well-spoken phone calls to the ACLU, DeKalb PD, and local news affiliates are the best and most effective means to draw attention to the events of the 15th. I cannot express to you the importance of "being the bigger people" here.

I don't know if the paypal fund has been set up yet. I know I'm certainly not "official" enough to do such a thing. Atl_sp/sp6 maybe could shed some light on this. I know one of the guys has been bailed out but I've gotten no word about the other. Also I know we'd like to help pay off the "honking" tickets for people and start a fund to hire a good lawyer for the two Anons arrested.
