Subject: Gentlemen, Welcome to Anonymous
---------------------

CONFIDENTIAL COMMUNICATION - NOT TO BE RELEASED TO THE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY WITHOUT REDACTING ALL IDENTIFYING INFORMATION

To the members of the Board of Supervisors
Riverside County
California

Gentlemen,

I am redacted reasons you might want to listen to me, if you knew me and I agitate, with other Anonymous, to expose and end the frauds and abuses of organised Scientology. (Please note, I do not aim to end the rights of persons to believe in and practise the tenets of Scientology, where those beliefs and practises are legal.)

You were recently shown some very foul material, provided to Mr Stone by the Church of Scientology ("CoS"), which the CoS alleged to have been created by Anonymous. I am very conscious of wanting not to overwhelm you with too much information, but, given that the international headquarters of the CoS is in your backyard, I believe it would be worth your while investing a little time to understand who we are, what we aim to achieve and how we aim to go about achieving those aims.

ABOUT ANONYMOUS

I have included a few sources for you below, should you wish to do some further reading.

In short, Anonymous are tens of thousands of ordinary people across the globe, with particular concentrations in the US, Canada, UK, Europe and Australia. Some Anonymous ("Anons") participate in unsavoury discussions on the internet on websites that have their own, very dark, satirical humour. Those sites are sometimes referred to as the "chans", their members "channers" and the fight against Scientology as "Project Chanology".

After the initial declaration of war against Scientology, in January 2008, the channers were joined by thousands of others, who are not channers. We are lawyers, pastors, grandmothers, teens, law enforcement officers, members of the military and "three-letter-agencies", doctors, nurses, videographers, journalists, former Scientologists... basically, anyone can be Anonymous. We are gay, straight, black, white, asian, Christians, atheists, pagans, Jews, Buddhists and others.

The influx of new people has changed the subculture from that of the chans. ie. We do not all participate in the movement with the same ferocity of expression, nor the same tolerance of prurient material. Many people new to Anonymous would find the discussions and language some use on Anonymous websites confronting, even disgusting. It's worth trying to understand, though. eg. "Fags" or "faggots" are used within Anonymous not as slurs - but to mean a person the idea being that being gay should not be a slur. Those of us who joined because we believe in the cause are often referred to within Anonymous as "douchebags". Anyone too self-absorbed may be called an "egofag". It's the "ego" bit that is insulting.

There is no organisation. There are no leaders. There is nothing to "join". There are no qualifications. We decide for ourselves. We comment on each others ideas as they are presented, but can not exercise any authority over any other person who is Anonymous. We cannot refuse membership of Anonymous - because there is no membership. There is no authority structure. We do not know each other. eg. A very small number of people now know my real name (four, I think). We call our discussions "the hive mind". Useful analogies to understand Anonymous are:
1. a flock of birds - each is independent, yet somehow we move together; and
2. cats - try herding a large number of cats and see how far you get. No one can control Anonymous.

We are committed to peaceful protest. We are creative. Hence, the use of the "V for Vendetta" masks - they meet our need for anonymity, to reduce our exposure to retribution from the CoS. They also give us public profile (a brand). We have protested peacefully in well over a hundred cities around the world every month for the last year. We deliberately work closely with law enforcement in almost all cases, so that they know what to expect.

Our deliberations happen on hundreds of public websites. Why don't you check us out? Probably the most influential site is: Home - Why We Protest . If you go to the "forums", you can read our tactics and plans as they are made. The forum has right now 636,735 posts (comments), made by 18,607 members. We welcome law enforcement to acquaint themselves with us, our plans and our methodology. You are invited to do the same.

ABOUT THE 53 PAGE DOCUMENT YOU WERE SHOWN OF ALLEGEDLY "ANONYMOUS" MATERIALS

Therefore:

1. it is quite possible that some of the material contained in the 53 page document provided to you by the CoS was created by persons who describe themselves as Anonymous. I do not defend it all. Not everyone who participates in Anonymous protests is someone I would choose to spend time with. What I do have in common with Anons is a desire to hold the CoS accountable for its frauds and abuses - and to end them; and

2. I believe - and evidence could probably be put together by law enforcement should it ever be necessary to show that - much of the material in the document you saw was created by the CoS in an attempt to persuade you to accede to its request. Certainly, in the many, many hours I have spent on Anonymous websites, I have not ever seen material genuinely supporting Nazism. Indeed, we have a very significant number of German Anons who would be deeply troubled by such material and a growing number of Anons in Israel who, it stands to reason, would not join a movement marked by such attitudes. Am I being ridiculous in asserting that the CoS might have manufactured evidence to use against Anonymous? Well, here are three things you can do to evaluate the possibility:

1. Talk to the Los Angeles police department. They've fielded the most complaints from the CoS and allegations that we are "terrorists", together with false reports of "crimes". They have dealt closely with many Anons and can put you straight;

2. Recall that these are the same people who said in 2007 that the BBC (that's right, the British Broadcasting Commission Corporation - doh!) made "terrorist death threats" against the CoS - http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/theeditor...tology_1.html; and

3. View the response of Anons when the CoS document first surfaced in New Zealand in October 2008 (http://forums.whyweprotest.net/291-s...-leaked-30978/) and this week when you were shown it (http://forums.whyweprotest.net/681024-post18/)

Please feel free to ask any questions you have, either by return email or at forums.whyweprotest.net .
