The international headquarters of Scientology, home of Golden Era Productions and also known as Gold Base, is the main headquarters for Scientology's elite paramilitary Sea Organization. The Sea Org consists of the most devout members, who are forced to sign the infamous “billion year contract”, and work at the secluded compound, often for only room and board. It is a closely guarded compound. Anti-Scientology protesters protest there, but infrequently and in small numbers.
Following the arrest of an individual (Anon Orange) on Sunday October 26th, 2008 on a disputed charge of trespass, a move was made by Riverside County supervisers to ban further protests in the area via a proposed ordinance that restricts picketing around any residential buildings[1], initially within a 300-ft radius, which went through several hearings and revisions, reducing the distance to a 50-ft radius. It eventually passed yesterday, the 24th of February, in a hearing described by civil rights attorney and Scientology critic Graham Berry as 'a farce'. At yesterday's hearing, the point was made that this proposed ordinance would not restrict picketing around Gold Base.
Several protesters, including Emmy award-winning journalist Mark Bunker (affectionately known to many anonymous protesters as Wise Beard Man[6]), headed up to Gold Base to test the new ordinance. There they were assured by Riverside County deputies that they were permitted to protest. However, Catherine Fraser and Scientology's well-known television spokesman Tommy Davis complained that two protesters were protesting in front of the guard gate, blocking access. Both Bunker and fellow protester Doug Owens were arrested in citizen's arrests for trespassing on what is understood to be public property – a location that Scientology's own attorney stated was public property available for picketing. Mark Bunker's citizens arrest came as as he was photographing the arrest of Doug Owens
The two were charged with "602.1(a) PC Tresspassing" (a misdemeanor), released, and a court appearance set for April 28.
Bunker stated[2] that “Ultimately, the Church of Scientology wants to stop protests at Gold and are putting tremendous pressure on Riverside officials to halt these protests. Church officials attempting to paint Anonymous as a dangerous organization with the help of Riverside County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff Stone, who spoke 20 minutes worth on nonsense about Anonymous being a hate group[7]. While they (Riverside) tried to halt the protests, the protests continue despite of their efforts. Scientology has yet to realize that their attempts to stop people from finding out the truth about the dangers and abuses of Scientology will only serve to create more interest, and ultimately more critics. We will keep protesting.”
