I am not too familiar with this, but I know some of you are (consensus, lilly marcab?)

Here are the 2 questions from the journalist (translated from french):

1. I know Scientology has a campaign against psychiatry here in Québec. Are there any scientific critiques made by credible sources regarding their campaign against psychiatry, but also their teachings in general(see q. 2)?

2. I've heard that Scientology's approach of psychology is dangerous, since it can induce false memories, which can be dangerous for someone psychologically. Is it true, and are there any serious critiques in the medical community that I can quote on the subject?


Here's the rest of the questions if you want to help answer them:

1. Does Scientology pay taxes in Quebec?

2. Are the "services" they give to parishioners taxable?

3. How much does it cost ($$$) to progress in Scientology?

4. Are there any other countries, other than Switzerland, who consider Scientology strictly as a commercial corporation?

These questions have already been answered but feel free to go at it if you believe we might have missed something that you know.

I have personally contacted Ordre des psychologues du Québec and my answer was that they were very familiar with scientology and that they were keeping an eye out for them.

I do think this is true, I spoke with ex members that still believed even after leaving the church, that they were the reincarnation of this or that great persona.

When they follow these courses, some of the techniques resemble hypnotism a lot.

Not that I know of, since they consider it as donations, as long as we are speaking about auditing, at least that is what Karine Bélanger (scientology PR for quebec city) said when she went on air on radio-x. That is a good question though.

In Israel, Japan, and I think, the Republic of China (Taiwan), as well any other heavily buddhist or muslim nation (where proselytizing or religious conversion may be against the law) like the Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, Scientology is registered as a "Non-religious applied philosophy" and/or "self help counseling"-type business, that pays taxes like any other for-profit business. Which is a 180 degree turnaround from what they claim in the English and French-speaking world.


Scientology will claim to be whatever "status" that happens to be most convenient for it in whatever location it infests, and will turn on a dime and claim a new completely different "status" when the old one stops being convenient.

The first piece of advice would be for the journalist to examine for him/herself the written materials produced by CCHR. Those will - on their face - highlight the problems that CCHR has in creating logical argument.

Secondly, the co-founder of the CCHR with Scientology was Dr Thomas Szasz, a psychiatrist who is now 90 years old. Scientology (and the CCHR) base their attacks on psychiatry on Dr Szasz's critiques of the profession.

Scientology was kicked out of Cyprus, Greece in March 1969 by order of the "Nomarch" of Corfu. (I've just finished read "The Commodore and the Colonels", by former British Vice-Consul Corfu, 1958-1971, John Forte.)

It later set up in Athens as KEPHE ("CENTRE OF APPLIED PHILOSOPHY"). However, after a 1996 trial, a court ordered that the associaton be dissolved or liquidated (the translator was unsure which). Excerpts of the translated judgment are here: SCIENTOLOGY is shut down in Greece

Now that's in the context of 'recovered' memories of childhood sexual abuse but the technique involved in Dianetic auditing is abreaction therapy without drugs.

One supplementary remark on this

As to Germany, it is mainly considered anti-constitutional (but it's not banned and last year there was a decision not to begin official proceedings checking for the possibility), there is no official category named "cult". Because of the anti-constitutionality it is being monitored by the interior intelligence agency Verfassungsschutz.
I think it is also considered a commercial operation, there certainly were court rulings going in this direction. There is no official recogniton as a religion as far as i'm aware. Courts have stated several times that it doesn't matter whether it is religious for certain decisions such as legality of the monitoring.
One court ruled against Scientology being a criminal organization, but called it "crimminogenic" instead, meaning that in its surroundings crimes are more likely to occur than just anyplace.

To summarize Germany's position on Scientology: It's considered anti-democratic, commercial, ideological, legal.
