Is it illegal for people to go through your trash?

My boyfriend and I are getting really sick of strangers going through our trash all hours of the night. Some random guy was "handling" our apt building's trash cans and wheeling them from around the back of the building to the curb at midnight the night before trash day. The same guy who illegaly went through our personal belongings in our garage is the guy who is SUPPOSED to take our trash to the curb - this week it wasn't him and in previous weeks we've been awakened by strangers rummaging only through our bldgs' trash.

I wanted my boyfriend to introduce these self-appointed garabage men to his US military training. He contended however that it is perfectly legal to go through people's trash. surely boyfriend is wrong?

I believe it depends where you place it. If it's on private property when it's grabbed, it's trespassing, if it's on the street already it's not illegal, I believe.

But disposing of stinky stuff would be a damn funny response.

Fake up and print out a lot of "official" looking documents, and then put them through a cheap shredder, so they end up spending ages putting them together to find they are useless?

Anything with any kind of importance should be properly shredded or burned, whether you are stalked by scifags or not.

If you are one of the poeple that live on LRH way I think you might have a few neighbors who would be willing to help you fill a bag the night before trash pick up.

I believe that once you throw it away, it's garbage. Because you have shared garbage facilities (I imagine, living in an apt), that means it's pretty much public property once it leaves your apartment. At our house, for example, the trash cans are behind a fence, therefore off-limits. However, once we put them out on the street, free for the picking.

Print out some pages from the OT levels and leave them on the top of each bag before you tie them up. That should give them a nicer surprise than a steaming turd.

Trash, on the street, is considered "no one's property" or public domain while it's on the street (there was a court case involving a sleazy paparazzi going through some Hollywood star's trash, that I'm too lazy too look up). Trash belongs to no one until it's claimed, which is usually done by your local waste-diposal service, but until then it's fair-game for assorted low-lifes.


The only thing that you can really do is make things interesting for would-be scavangers/spais, but at the same time, don't make it too hard on innocent garbage men who have to pick it up.

Don't put mouse traps in your trash, injurious booby traps meant for humans are illegal.

Also, dump coffee grinds and a cup of coffee on the top of your trash, or kool-aid packages mixed with only a small amount of water, as it will stain their hands as well as let them know of any cuts they might have. At the very least they'll be forced to buy gloves.

If you decide to shred papers, put messages on the paper that will make them paranoid or enturbulate them i.e.

"The police know about your stalking"
"L. Ron Hubbard was forced to end cycle by David Miscavige"

etc. etc.

The only thing you might get them for is "unlicensed refuse collection" because garbage trucks might need a city permit. They do around here. They use this to try and stop the junk pile pickers during spring cleanup (never works). The city loses about 100k a year to this because of the people who go out, pick up metal, and sell it to the recyclers, so the city can't.

Human waste in whole might be a problem, used tissue not so much.

Animal waste..... well we have many cats and large dog (and curtains). It is standard to spread it all over the top of our discarded goods.

Certainly filming them collecting your DNA would be a good idea is your hair is ever to be found at a crime scene.

If the garbage is stored on the property of your apartment complex and the dumpster divers aren't residents, then your management company might be able to get them for trespassing. Other than that(which would take a lot of work to get little accomplished), I don't think there is much you can do, other than messing with them by making the garbage really nasty.

Spraying ammonia on trash is something done in rural areas to keep away animals.

If they're going thru your garbage, shredding papers is not optional, it's mandatory. What might be an even better idea is since you're moving in the near future, just hang on to anything like bank and credit card statements, insurance paperwork, anything from the government or is medical or legal, and shred/toss/dump everything later after the move.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

Get a shredder and shred any paper you are throwing away. If you have cats, mix the shredded file with the cat litter when you throw it out. If you don't have pet waste you can use, then mix them with the kitchen trash to get nasty spoiled food on it. That will make them have to dig through poop or god knows what else to get to it. Maybe pop a few cheap light bulps in the bags too so they will cut their fingers on the glass. With luck, they will catch something that will make them sorry they ever decided to do the cult leaders dirty work for them.

Then you can smile when you see them stealing your trash.

It is not likely illegal to go through trash once it is in public. One should however always assume that anything thrown away can be collected and used against you either by the authorities or scilons and should take due precautions to prevent ones private life being exposed:

1. Cross cut shred / destroy anything with a name or address on it - yours or any friends.
2. ditto credit / bank details
3. ditto any medication packaging, especially prescription labels etc.
4. ditto any supplements packaging that may indicate any medical condition.
5. significant quantities of alcoholic beverage containers may lead to the idea you're alcoholics.

If you want to mess with their heads you can generate bogus trash for them to look through that will give them misleading information (your Glaxo Smith Kline pay receipt); you might consider shredding this too for realism if they are going to the trouble of reconstructing your shreddings - Tin foil tip: store, mix up and throw out shreddings in separate batches so it is unlikely a full document will be included in any one batch and shred up junk mail to add bulk if necessary.

I swear to god, this hippie friend used my blow drier in 1991 when he came down for a visit and I can STILL smell the patchouli! You put that in your trash can, and I guarantee the diggers will be banned from the org until the smell wears off!

AFAIK it's not illegal for scavengers to go through your trash, but is IS illegal to plant dangerous devices in there, also there's a good chance you'll 'get' an innocent trash collector. which is NOT a good idea.

there's many good and perfectly legal suggestions ITT, may be a good idea to try some of them.

go to your local recycle company to dump out important info you've shredded up so it can be deposited safely

then sub the so called documents with the stories of Xenu,The real story of l Ron Hubbard and the Sp's count

list how much money it takes to get into the church and what labor they will have to pull if they continue to work for the church in the future...

make them think what they are doing...

if not record them doing the dirty work....

I would do all of the above except for the glass--it would be bad to injure someone innocent (people looking for bottles and cans, or even the garbage workers). Pouring some foul liquid on paper trash is good (especially if it has oil in it--makes the paper hard to salvage). Maybe sour milk and salad dressing?

In addition, if you have any way to get a bunch of ants, you could put them in there. Ants crawling all over you = good trash scavenging deterrent.

yup totally legal all 50 states partly because it is on public easment. i would and i have went through certain scifag garbage myself cuz its legal fight fire with garbage!
