So, I'm sure you're all familiar with the south park episode wherein the town officially declares the word "faggot" to mean "inconsiderate motorcycle riders." Anonymous has a long and storied tradition with the word, but it occurs to me that we could have a lot more fun if we redirected the word "faggot" to mean either "member of the WBC" or more generally "loud, offensive protesters." Second definition means we still get to use it with each other with impunity, but also to piss off the WBC, however it does raise the problem that homophobes would use it under the new definition to refer to LGBT activists. It's non-violent, it doesn't remove their right to speak their minds, and it will piss them the hell off. Anonymous and the internet have a good track record for steering language, so I think this is within our reach. What do you guys think?
We could also define ourselves as God. And "Hate" as "licks". I'm probably going too far with this. Reset. Their most popular sign says something like "God Hates Fags". Whatabout redefine "fags" as "signs"?
Defining ourselves as God will meet with significant opposition IRL. I don't know if you were being facetious with that suggestion or not, but it's a bad idea because it won't work. Redefining "faggot" is something that a lot of people have been hungry for for a long time, I think the time is ripe to do something and the target is someone that EVERYBODY hates, including (especially) good portions of the LGBT community who you need on your side for this type of a project. "Fag" as it is popularly used in the US right now would best describe "someone who is obnoxious and inconsiderate of others." Some people use this to talk about gay people who are obnoxious (i.e. that kid with the obnoxious lisp and the tramp stamp that says "harder" who cannot talk about anything other than how gay he is).* This is also at the core of the south park definition (harley riders who cannot deal with not being the center of attention at all times and need to dress up and make loud noises to disrupt everyone until they get it). This shares a lot in common with the public perception of the WBC: self-absorbed, loud, bigoted assholes who need to be dickholes for attention at every conceivable opportunity. The shift of usage from "obnoxious person (with potential undertones of disdain for their sexual orientation)" to "obnoxious protester" is a pretty small one. "Fags" to "signs" would be a huge shift, and one that would take years to steamroll into popular culture. * Some people use this to describe all gay people, but we don't care about those guys because they suck.
