The terrorist shooter had concealed carry and security guard licenses in Florida which does require completion of a gun safety course. A forensic assessment would have screened him out as dangerous.
At the present time in our current political climate it's easy to blame Islam for all the world's wrongs, and since I'm Jewish it would be easier still you might think but you would be wrong as I see this crime not as a religious hate crime but one that's come about as a result of little or no control over gun sales and gun use in general. Not to mention the low value placed on human lives.
It would have screened him out as dangerous whether or not he was a follower of Islam or any other religion. Unfortunately no forensic assessment was carried out.

Fire at Orlando gunman’s mosque was ‘set intentionally,’ authorities say | The Washington Post Quote: The mosque where Pulse nightclub shooter Omar Mateen occasionally worshiped was intentionally set on fire, authorities in Florida said. The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said emergency crews responded to the Islamic Center of Fort Pierce shortly after midnight Sunday and extinguished the flames that were spilling out of the mosque. Authorities are investigating the incident as arson. “A fire at any place of worship is alarming, regardless of the circumstances,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Video captured at the Fort Pierce Islamic Center shows an individual approached the east side of the building just moments before a flash is seen and the fire starts.” Sheriff’s officials said they will soon release the video to the public and ask for help identifying the suspect in the arson case. <snipped> Early Monday, Maj. David Thompson with the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office told reporters it was a “horrible tragedy not only for the Islamic center but for our community.” “I don’t want to speculate on a motive,” he said. “We all know the implications of the date and the time of year that this is — the 9/11 anniversary. Is that related? I wouldn’t want to speculate, but certainly that is in the back of our minds.” Thompson told reporters that “evidence has revealed that this fire was set intentionally.” Here's the complete article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...mosque-attended-by-pulse-shooter-omar-mateen/
U.S. arrests wife of gunman who killed 49 at Orlando nightclub | Reuters Quote: U.S. authorities have arrested the wife of the gunman who killed 49 people at an Orlando gay nightclub last year, a massacre that intensified fears about attacks against Americans inspired by the Islamic State, the U.S. attorney general said on Monday. The arrest of Noor Salman came seven months after her husband Omar Mateen went on the rampage and was killed by police while holed up in the Florida club. "Certainly I can confirm that an arrest did occur in this case," Attorney General Loretta Lynch told MSNBC after reports in the New York Times and other media outlets. "We said from the beginning we were going to look at every aspect of this case, every aspect of this shooter's life to determine - not just why did he take these actions, but who else knew about them, was anyone else involved?" Salman was arrested at her home outside San Francisco, the New York Times reported, citing an unnamed law enforcement official. She faces federal charges of obstruction of justice, and aiding and abetting the attempted provision of material support to a foreign terrorist organization, ABC News reported, citing the FBI and her lawyer. Salman, who was repeatedly questioned by law enforcement interrogators after the club attack, will appear in federal court in Oakland on Tuesday morning. She is expected to be extradited to Tampa, where she was indicted, ABC reported. Continued at http://www.reuters.com/article/us-orlando-shooting-idUSKBN15023N
