Something not good has been happening in science, if we have a ten fold increase in retracted papers.

Scientists are people, some good some bad. In any human endeavor there will be people who try to game the system for some personal advantage. The good thing here is that cheaters are caught and expelled, their careers ruined. Science is self-correcting because you can verify results, you don't have to take anyone's word for it. Eventually the truth always comes out.

Science used to be the exploration of reality.
Now it's an industry.

Because, you know, we don't have anything to explore anymore, we have reached the limits of knowledge. Humans are the most evolved species. Why would we want to explore our kingdom ? It's already ours, we only have to monetize it.

It's certainly not a new problem, but it seems to have gotten worse recently. That is interesting (in a bad way) and deserves some research as to what's going on.

As for self correcting, given time, yes. But that time frame might be measured in decades, which means we live for all those years with faulty research.

In any case, it's fascinating to watch how science works, and doesn't work.

Like some scientists say, it takes one generation of "lead scientists" to die for science to change.

Maybe people are now more inclined to point out when a paper is crap, and the peer-review before publishing hasn't caught up yet?

Or maybe there is a lot of fake sh*t out there that is created to defend big corps, like Monsanto and Coca Cola have been caught doing.

That's one theory. Another possibility is that the internet makes it easier to check things out.

But in the retraction cases, it wasn't that the paper was bad science, it was that is was fraudulent. This should have been picked up before publication. Why wasn't it? What went wrong with the process?

Conspiracy theory, huh? Could be. But that still comes back to the peer review process. Even studies from big corporations are peer reviewed, or need to be, to be considered science.

I wonder if the issue is concentrated in certain fields. I'd also ask how much the publish or perish attitude is driving this increase.

It is not who is doing the bad research, it is that it is happening at all, that concerns me. I see it being done by many groups, including gov, industry, and academics. This should concern all, not be cause for partisan bickering.

I'm aware of questionable research done by corporations.
I am also aware of questionable research done by gov. The food pyramid, for example.

This is an important issue, one that is critical for a society to come to terms with. To point out that one group does it, and ignore the other groups who do it, is to point out your own biases, nothing more.

The studies I linked were not sponsored by industry, far as I can tell. They were academic papers that were fraudulent. So greed and profit doesn't come into play in these instances.

The Coke study is so obviously biased that an 11 year old could see it. A study on sugar by Coca Cola. Do you really need anyone to tell you there might be something suspect about that?

What is driving that trend? Is it a trend? The NYT thinks so. That is what I wonder about. What is driving this increase? DH says maybe people have changed, more willing to point things out. I mentioned that the internet makes it easier to find bad studies.

It'd be interesting to do a study on where the fraud occurs, whether in academia, gov or business, and do statistical analysis to see what comes out.Is it driven by the funding? Is it driven by the desire for tenure and a life long job? Is it all about pay raises?Is it ethics and morals? Or is it just something we now notice a lot more, due to more information.

There are a lot more pay-for-publish outfits these days, and they've been shown to be a joke when it comes to peer-review. (Not that we should have warm fuzzies about non pay-for-publish peer-review.)

A breakdown of the retractions by field, publication, etc, would be good.

It would have been hard to produce an accepted fraudulent scientific paper without a little help from something powerful.

They are generally shut down pretty quickly if they are only backed by science. Someone's got to impose them to the world.
